Bethany is new to the Bad Apple Records family, but she’s been performing solo and as part of All Around the Dinner Table’s live band since Summer of 2016.
Stay tuned for updates concerning her debut LP, which will be produced by Brandon Miles from All Around the Dinner Table. For now, check out a live recording of “We Break Things” below this blog entry!
My mom says that I sang before I could walk, lying in my crib, humming away. Around the age of four I sang “Blessed Assurance” in front of my dad’s church in Liberia, West Africa, where I lived for seven years. My mother taught me to play guitar when I was fourteen and has sung with me my whole life, her tenor voice melding and warbling around my own and my sister’s. Her mother and father did the same with her, playing piano and banjo and singing at parties and church events.
I began writing songs when I was in college and a worship leader. I then took a large break for a few years when I was a little busy having three children and my husband was going through medical school and residency. A priceless friend not only encouraged me but challenged me to pick up my guitar again, to write again, and to perform. And since I moved to Bowling Green almost three years ago, my life has been blissfully full of just those things. Music is as much a part of me as my blood.
Because of that, it’s a little challenging to distance myself enough to explain why I do what I do – write songs about the world. And, why I feel so compelled to invite others to hear them. However, I can say that after a tremendously tumultuous 2016 here are a few reasons why music-makers and songwriters are so important to our world.
- Great music helps us feel the things that we need to feel in order to be alive
- Great music helps us open a bridge to communicate together about the most important things: love, death, loss, growth, faith, hope
- Great music bypasses our rational brain that argues and analyzes and gets right to our soul
- Great music brings us together
- Great music inspires us to dream, plan, organize, get involved, or let go
- Great music helps us to heal
With that said, I am so excited to be coming on board with Bad Apple Records! I hope to make some truly great music with them and invite all of you to come along with me as I talk about the things that I love the most.
