David Bowie wasn’t rock’s first showman, but he may have been its first shaman. Unfettered by genre conventions, he didn’t just explore outer space; he created it. Bowie told listeners, “It’s okay. I’m weird, too. Don’t fit in in your universe? You can be a part of mine.” Without Bowie, there is no glam rock, no space rock, and no Lady Gaga, but he was much more than that. He was the style and the substance that personified the rock n’ roll frontman and the pop genius.
What some of our other artists had to say…
“David Bowie penned one of my all time favorite songs, ‘Heroes.’ He was one of the most unique artists that I have ever seen. The music industry, and arts, just lost one of its greatest.”
– Josiah Murphy, Why They Came
“I feel like I should say something, but I don’t know what else I could say that hasn’t already been said. The man was a legend and creative genius. I remember one time at church we played “Let’s Dance” as kind of a fun way to start the day. At that point I had only really listened to his early work (Hunky Dory/Ziggy Stardust), but that really opened my eyes to some of his later work and how good that was as well. It takes a real talent to be able to remake your image and sound and have it still be great.”
– Zack Messick, Re-Education Camp
“David Bowie made it okay to be a weird artist. I will miss having him in the world. We will always have his Labyrinth bulge.”
– Jon Russelburg
“I always wanted to cover ‘Under Pressure,’ with Derek. Such a fun (but compelling) song. Maybe Bowie and Mercury are rehearsing it again as I type this…”
– Brandon Miles, All Around the Dinner Table
